Indian numerals, Hindi numerals: what are we talking about?

Indian numerals (also called Hindi numerals or Eastern Arabic numerals) are the numeric symbols used in Arabic-speaking countries. ٠ (zero), ١ (one), ٢ (two), ٣ (three)... up to ٩ (nine). They descend from the Indo-Arabic numeral system, the same one that gave birth to our Western numerals.

On a watch dial, these numerals bring an immediately recognizable aesthetic. The calligraphy is rounder, more fluid than Roman numerals or stick indices. It's a rare style in Western watchmaking, making it an interesting collector's piece.

The nuance between "Arabic numerals" and "Indian numerals" is often confusing. In reality, both terms designate the same numeral system, but "Indian numerals" (or "Hindi") generally refers to the Eastern forms (١ ٢ ٣) used in the Middle East. Watchmakers often use the term "Arabic Dial" to describe dials bearing these Eastern numerals.
