How to choose your custom watch

Engraving, custom dial, couple watch, gift. The criteria to find the custom watch matching your desires and budget.

01

Understanding your needs before choosing

Choosing a custom watch means first knowing what you're looking for. Customization covers a wide spectrum: from simple initial engraving on an existing model to complete creation of a bespoke watch with movement, case, dial and strap selection.

If you're looking for a gift with a personal touch, engraving is often enough. A name, a date, a short message laser-engraved on the case back. Quick, affordable, and meaningful. Engraved watches rank among the most appreciated gifts for birthdays, weddings and graduations.

If you want a truly different piece, you need to go further. Choosing the dial style (sunburst, fumé, textured), hand type, strap color. That's where the online configurator comes into its own: you visualize your watch before ordering.

For couples, matching watches offer a powerful symbol. Two pieces sharing the same dial or engraving, adapted to masculine and feminine wrists. It's an object worn daily, far more present than a ring tucked in a drawer.

Custom watch selection criteria

Several technical criteria guide your choice. Consider them before being seduced by a design.

Case size. For a slim wrist (under 16cm), aim for 36 to 38mm. For a medium wrist (16 to 18cm), 39 to 42mm. For a large wrist (over 18cm), up to 44mm. A watch too large overflows the wrist and loses elegance. Too small, it lacks presence. Measure your wrist with a flexible tape before ordering.

Movement. Automatic for mechanical pleasure, quartz for absolute precision. An automatic movement requires regular wearing (or a winder) to keep running. Quartz always works, regardless of wearing frequency.

Water resistance. 30 meters handles splashes. 100 meters for swimming. 200 meters for diving. If you wear your watch at the pool or sea, choose at minimum 100 meters and sapphire crystal.

Strap. Leather is the most elegant but fears water. Steel is the most durable and versatile. NATO is the most casual and easiest to swap. FKM rubber suits sports activities. Think versatility: a watch with standard lug width (20 or 22mm) accepts dozens of different straps.

What budget for a custom watch?

Budget depends on the desired level of customization. Here are the main ranges.

Engraving only on an existing watch: 20 to 80 euros. You buy the watch, then an engraver adds your text by laser or point. Simple, quick, effective.

Entry-level custom watch: 150 to 300 euros. NH35 automatic movement, 316L steel case, basic dial, mineral crystal, NATO or standard leather strap. This is the entry point for a genuine hand-assembled watch.

Mid-range custom watch: 300 to 600 euros. NH36 movement, sapphire crystal, premium dial (sunburst or fumé), steel bracelet with deployant clasp. This is the optimal value for most enthusiasts.

High-end custom watch: 600 to 1200 euros. 904L steel case, premium movement, enameled or lacquered dial, exotic leather or solid-link steel bracelet. Finishes that rival far more expensive Swiss brands.

In every case, a custom watch offers superior value compared to an equivalent brand-name watch. You pay for components and assembly, not marketing or middlemen.

Where to buy a custom watch

Several channels exist for acquiring a custom watch. Each has its advantages.

Brands specializing in customization offer online configurators. You select each component, visualize the result, and a watchmaker assembles your piece. This is the most reliable method for obtaining a quality watch. WatchModCustom, for example, offers this experience with delivery and warranty.

Independent watchmaker artisans work on commission. You discuss your project, the watchmaker proposes options and assembles the watch in their workshop. The dialogue is direct, customization possibilities are maximum. This is the choice for the most singular projects.

Platforms like Etsy host dozens of custom watch sellers. Quality varies greatly from one seller to another. Check reviews, request photos of actual watches (not 3D renders), and inquire about the movement used.

A tip: avoid abnormally low-priced offers. A hand-assembled automatic watch with steel case and sapphire crystal cannot cost 50 euros. If the price seems too good, the product hides compromises on components or assembly.
