Seiko Mod Submariner: building a legendary homage

The Submariner style is probably the most reproduced in the Seiko Mod world. A 40mm round case, rotating bezel with graduated insert, black dial with luminescent indices, Mercedes hands: it's a universal watchmaking language. Building a homage through Seiko Mod lets you achieve this look for a fraction of the price, with freedom to customize every detail.

The case: the foundation

The ideal case for a Sub homage measures 39 to 41mm in diameter. Parts suppliers offer cases specifically designed for this style: straight sides, short lugs, screw-down crown at 3 o'clock with crown guard. 316L steel is the standard, with a brushed finish on top and polished sides.

Case height is an often overlooked point. An authentic Sub case is about 12.5mm thick. Mod cases vary between 12 and 14mm. Beyond 13mm, the watch starts looking thick on the wrist. Check this dimension before ordering.

Water resistance depends on gasket quality. A well-assembled case with new gaskets holds 100 to 200 meters without issue. But pressure testing remains essential if you actually plan to dive with it.

The dial and hands

The classic Sub dial is matte or lacquered black with round applied indices at 12 o'clock (the triangle) and even hours, sticks at odd hours. The date window sits at 3 o'clock with a cyclops (magnifier) on the crystal. Lume (luminescent material) on indices and hands is generous: BGW9 for blue-green glow, or C3 for classic green tone.

Mercedes hands (the hour hand shaped as a circle with arrow) are the style's signature. Parts suppliers offer them in polished, brushed or black PVD versions. For a faithful look, choose polished hands with lume matching the dial.

Popular variants: the Hulk (green sunburst dial with green bezel), the Kermit (black dial with green bezel), the Batman (two-tone blue-black bezel). Each combination has its fans.

The bezel

This is the piece that gives the Sub character. A ceramic insert with 60-minute graduation, engraved numerals filled with silver or platinum paint. The luminous pearl (pip) at 12 o'clock is an important detail: it must align with the dial's triangle marker.

Ceramic inserts sell between 15 and 40 euros. Aluminum is a cheaper option but scratches over time. For a homage that ages well, ceramic is the logical choice.

The movement

For a Sub date, the NH36 is the standard movement. For a no-date version (vintage Sub style), the NH35 suffices. The NH34 with GMT complication allows building a GMT-Master homage with a 24-hour hand, for those who want to push the concept further. Check our NH35 vs NH36 comparison to decide.

The bracelet

A brushed steel oyster bracelet with fine-adjustment clasp is the natural choice. The oyster bracelet has flat links with brushed center and polished edges. The clasp should have a micro-adjustment system (3 to 5 positions) for comfort tuning based on temperature.

Alternative: an FKM-type rubber strap with deployant buckle gives a more modern look and superior summer comfort. The rubber strap is also lighter, better suited for thinner wrists.

Total budget

A complete Sub homage in Seiko Mod costs between 350 and 550 euros. That's a fraction of the price of a brand homage (Steinhart, Invicta, Squale) and a tiny fraction of the original's price. The difference: every part is chosen by you, every detail is customizable. It's your version of this iconic design.
